Once upon a time, I had a beautiful new sofa. Elegant lines, a high swooping back, plush but firm, in a beautiful cream... stunning.
Flash forward nearly 14 years:
It is no longer stunning... but still incredibly comfortable and functional. It has a small rip here and there... and it's not quite cream anymore.... It's abused. Spilled milk, dumped coffee, smears of whatnot, and pee (yes, pee), etc, etc.
We're not buying a new one just to be ruined by kiddos - we need to make due for another few years (potty training and all that jazz).... and secretly I LOVE that sofa. It was just so beautiful (once upon a time) and it is sooooooooooooo comfortable.
All in all, I keep it looking & smelling pretty good - and it's not by purchasing fancy cleaners. I do own a steam cleaner (anyone with kids and dogs should - it will pay for itself in the long run and the neighbors will be your best friends if you let them borrow it). The cleaning solution? Hot water, 1 cup white vinegar, couple drops dish soap. Douse the sofa & cushions with baking soda and steam clean the crap out of it.
Fizzy, scrubby, sterilizing goodness.... and if you can, set it all outside in the sun to dry. Ah.... sunlight. Nature's beach.
