I'm not sure why... I should have some female urge or need to make my house beautiful, but I don't. I'm just tired and, let's face it... lacking the funds to really get in to decor, motifs, color schemes, etc, etc.
But, my children still deserve a nice place to call their own. A little slice of personal heaven on earth... their own happy place. O always wants to be the Princess... Iz wants to be the Queen (smart girl)... Juju loves cars.
Over the course of the last 2 weeks, with about $100 dollars to spend, I set about making their rooms special.
The girls were easy - they were sharing a beat up old dresser. It's still beat, but now hidden behind some lovely pink sheer curtains (the closet doors had to go - they kept falling off and I was afraid one of them would get smacked by a falling door). Their window also got new HOT PINK curtains - they were on super sale on Amazon... I guess there aren't many takers for silky soft hot pink....
The nightlight is handmade with a vintage (restored and edited) photo of my Grandmother... The cork board was an old one I had in the office - brought back to life with some spray paint. The artwork was picked out by O and printed here at home.
The poms.... LOVE the poms... we're making more. Lot's more. Tulle is so cheap - Fabric.com has 6" wide rolls of 25 yards for $2.50. You can make 2 poms per roll.... and it's so easy, even a 4 year old can make them (and she is now making them all on her own). I used this tutorial from Chintzy Couture - http://www.chintzycouture.com/2011/10/tulle-pom-pom-tutorial.html
Juju....... First of all, Juju needed a new bed. He's 18 months. He'd broken the crib. Time for a big boy bed. I found a blue toddler car bed on Craig's List... for CHEAP. I had some random lumber (always do) to cut some slats to support the mattress.
Juju inherited my dresser... the dresser my parents bought at a garage sale when I was a little girl. A fresh coat of paint is all it needed.... along with some silver spray paint applied to some old cork boards I had out in the office. Juju also inherited my old CD player - a Christmas gift from an ex-beau nearly 15 years ago.
The photographs on his wall are originals... taken on our trip across county. The vivid blues and classic cars are PREFECT for him.... to hang them, I placed 2 screws and strung wire... and clipped the photos to the wire.
I quickly found that they don't make decent curtains for little boys. They have baby ones, and ones for boys I didn't like... maybe I'm just picky. Even searching for the perfect fabric was daunting. There are lots of car fabrics... but not the right one. I settled for the subway map print and lined/wrapped it with a bright teal solid cotton (50% off at Joann's). I LOVE them, and I'm sure if Juju were better with words, he'd let me know he loves them too (Iz even told me "I lub it.")
Soon, the floating shelves will be finished - they're in the shop awaiting a final coat of paint... and more art will come... and more fun. Next? I want to make Juju a hanging nightlight... using an old bicycle wheel and twinkle lights... and I want to use a canvas painters tarp & paint a town on it (roads, etc) for a rug/play mat for his room ;)
Now, what to do with the rest of the house?
