This post is a little different, but still very personal. It's not about my family, or silly kids, or about the workshop or tools. It's not about cooking or the garden. It's about my mental health and the heath of our relationship with others.
I've made a choice to remove "news" from my life.... for now... I LOVE social media and even before these online venues for news, events, sharing, social & political causes... there were online news services and cable news. I loved news.
That said, the steady barrage of news and memes and links online got to be too much. Even the mainstream media has become so polarizing - so skewed... even with the news networks, everything is a news "program" and it's basically an editorial. What happened to actual news? Why must they insist that we all draw a million lines in the sand and decided who we hate and who we love based on the "news?" I know, no one is saying that, but it sure feels that way. I've had enough.
Especially with respect to Facebook... I tried un-liking every political organization, every news site, every site with an agenda that I could possibly think of... but my newsfeed was just that - crap news that made me feel angry, depressed, and not really loving my fellow man (and not really liking quite a few of my friends and family). The sharing, the commenting, the liking. The hate. Every bit of it boiled down the most simplistic fear-mongering crap I'd ever seen. STOP.
So, It's been a week now and there has been no news in my life. I'm loving it. The world is still turning and I feel so much more calm and focused and I'm starting to actually like people again. Sure, I used to hop around different pages and read the latest. Used to comment - noting my outrage - responding to someone who made some totally off base/false assertions - sharing my outrage - screaming it - hoping that it would help somehow - that it would make a difference... but you know... it doesn't and it never will... not with respect to the news.
So, I beg you (you all know who you are) - stop. I know you want to feel like you belong, like others can identify with you, that you're part of some larger community... but it's not about that. It's about your friends. It's about your family. It's about the family next door and the guy who works at the gas station, or the woman at the bank, or your daughter's teacher. That's the community. Politicians don't care about the comments and shares and likes. It won't do a damn thing. It will only serve to alienate others. It will only cause you more stress and anxiety. It will only raise your blood pressure and lower your IQ. It will only stop us all from EVER seeing eye to eye and coming together.
PS - it actually is good for your heath :D ARTICLE HERE!
